Twenty years ago, Halle Berry starred in the first film based entirely on a DC villain, making her the actress who managed to fit into the tight leather suit and mask of “Catwoman.”
Although the film received mixed reviews, she didn’t seem to mind much: “It was one of my highest-paid roles, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t want to feel like, ‘Oh, I can only do award-worthy things.’ What is an award-worthy performance? It was a great opportunity for a woman of color to be a superhero. Why wouldn’t I try it?” she once explained.
The truth is that, although that film would not be the most remembered of her successful career, it did change her life forever. “I became a cat lover, because of that,” she told Entertainment Weekly. She added: “I just rescued four kittens that I found in my garden three weeks ago. I am a Catwoman through and through because of that experience and the relationships with those beautiful beings. That experience changed me.”
That interview was part of a series of interviews that Halle Berry gave to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film’s release.
As a thank you, and referring to the anniversary, Berry took to her Instagram account to pay tribute to that film and took the opportunity to introduce two of those kittens that she had just rescued.
“And yet… Meow! Today marks 20 years since I had the honor of bringing this iconic character to life. She will always be close to my heart and I will always be Patience Phillips, aka Catwoman,” she wrote, alongside a series of photos showing her posing in black underwear, wearing the character’s mask and without a bra, while holding two cats.
In other images, she said that these “furry babies” appeared in her yard looking for their mother and she thanked one of her friends for helping her in the process of rescuing the new members of the family.
“Meet Boots and Coco! I found these two little fur babies in my yard along with their two siblings and their mom! I spayed the mom, released her back into my yard and she is now our outdoor cat. I have found the other two babies forever homes and these two are our new loves. It’s a very lively house!”
