A 28-year-old high school coach for the Jasper Independent School District in Texas was shot and killed at a rooftop bar in San Antonio while in town for the Texas High School Coaches Association Conference.

The shooting that killed Ayden Burt occurred shortly after midnight at a local bar in the 500 block of E. Crockett St. The woman was reportedly at the bar with other coaches from around the state when the shooting occurred.

Humble High School football coach Robert Murphy, who was at the scene, described the scene as “traumatic”: “She was sitting next to me, laughing and talking, and then she was bleeding in my lap,” Murphy said.

Prayers for Ayden Burt’s family and community. She was sitting right next to me laughing and talking and the next bleeding in my lap. My coaches did everything they could performing CPR etc to save her life. She was excited about the upcoming year. Traumatizing. https://t.co/Jn2yYrcFan

Jasper Independent School District Superintendent John Seybold announced the news of Burt’s death in a statement on social media.

“It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of one of our staff members, Ayden Burt. We ask for prayers of comfort for his family, as well as his extended family, the students and staff of Jasper ISD,” Seybold said.

Burt had been teaching in the Jasper School District since 2019, teaching English at both Jasper High School and Jasper Jr. High. She also served as a cheerleading coach and sponsor.

The San Antonio Police Department urges anyone with information regarding this murder to contact its homicide unit at 210-207-7635.
