New York Mets infielder Jeff McNeil was the hero of the day in a 3-2 win over their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, thanks to a two-run homer that put the game’s final score to bed at Yankee Stadium.

McNeil hit his ninth homer of the 2024 season in prime time, driving a shot to right field to drive in two of the Mets’ three runs in the game.

The 32-year-old took advantage of the movement in the Yankees’ bullpen at the beginning of the sixth inning when Luis Gil (5.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 K) left the game and Aaron Boone gave way to reliever Michael Tonkin, who ended up wasting Gleyber Torres’ solo homer to make it 1-1 and took the loss.

Tonkin ended up leaving a pitch deep in the power zone that McNeil hit hard to score Pete Alonso and make it 3-1.

Despite the run scored by Anthony Volpe after a double by Alex Verdugo in the bottom of the sixth inning and an offensive in the ninth inning that included Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, the Queens team ended up securing the victory by the minimum with a save credited to Jake Diekman (4).

The Yankees thus suffered their 43rd defeat of the season, leaving their record at 60-43, while the Mets (52-48) have their second consecutive victory after Monday’s 6-4 victory over the Miami Marlins.
