The Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed the arrest of Joaquín Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquín Guzmán Loera “El Chapo” along with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada on July 25, while another of his sons, Ovidio Guzmán López, is no longer in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), and was reportedly released on July 23.
The BOP public database has Ovidio Guzmán López, identified with number 72884-748, who was “released” on July 23 of this year.
Not being in custody does not mean free
The agency’s official website specifies that in cases like Ovidio’s, the fact that the inmate is listed as “released” indicates that “the inmate is no longer in BOP custody,” but does not directly imply that he is free.
“Consider that the prisoner may be on parole, controlled release, or in the custody of another correctional facility or justice system,” authorities explain to Latinus.
Ovidio Guzmán, “El Ratón” was arrested on January 5, 2023 in the town of Jesús María, Culiacán, and on September 15, his extradition to the United States to face charges related to fentanyl trafficking was announced.
He pleaded “not guilty”
Ovidio Guzmán López was sent to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, where three days after his arrival he appeared at a hearing in which he pleaded “not guilty” to the five charges against him.
The charges are: possession of drugs with the purpose of distribution, conspiracy to import, manufacture and distribute controlled substances, money laundering, participating in a criminal enterprise and carrying firearms.
On Thursday, July 25, the United States Department of Justice announced the arrest of two leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Ismael Zambada García, “El Mayo,” and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Both were arrested in El Paso, Texas, and face multiple charges in the United States for leading criminal operations, including the manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl.
