In 2018, the Boston Red Sox decided to bet on young manager Alex Cora. He had just won the World Series as an assistant with the Houston Astros and in his first year he won the championship with the red-and-white team.
The Puerto Rican manager was suspended for a year in 2020 due to the sign-stealing controversy during his time with the Astros. But in 2021 he returned to the Red Sox bench and although this season has not gone so well for him, the Massachusetts franchise has decided to give him a million-dollar contract extension.
The deal will keep Cora as Red Sox manager through the end of the 2027 season, potentially an eight-year stint with the American League East team.
What is most surprising about the Puerto Rican manager’s recent extension with the Red Sox is the millionaire salary he agreed to with the organization. This agreement will place him as one of the highest paid next season, in addition to a considerable increase compared to the 2024 season.
Cora is earning $4 million this season, the last of his current contract. But starting in 2025, with this new extension, the 48-year-old Puerto Rican will earn just over $7 million per season.
The extension recently signed with the Red Sox stipulates that he will be on the Red Sox bench for three seasons in exchange for $21.7 million dollars.
Cora prioritized her family to stay in Boston
Alex Cora is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and some rumors have even linked him with a possible move to the New York Yankees. However, the Puerto Rican preferred to keep his peace of mind and prioritize his family in making the decision to stay in Boston.
“I promise you that this decision was based more on the comfort of my family than on my professional career,” Cora said on Wednesday when the contract extension was made official.
“They believed in me from day one, they doubled down in 2021 after everything that happened in 2017. There was a lot of conversation during the offseason and I just want to be happy and comfortable,” the Red Sox manager emphasized.
