The Olympic Games have begun and thousands of athletes are set to make history in Paris 2024. However, unlike other major sporting events, most athletes competing in France will not be receiving huge fortunes. For this reason, many are looking for financial support beyond sponsors or government funding. This is the case of Jack Laugher, a British diver who has found a significant source of income on OnlyFans.
Laugher made history by winning Britain’s first ever gold medal in the show jumping event at Rio 2016, where he also took a silver medal, and competed at Tokyo 2020, taking a bronze medal. Now the 29-year-old is looking to add another medal to his career and his country, although sport is not his main source of income.
After 12 years of racing and three Olympic medals, Laugher still receives an annual funding of £28,000 ($36,000) and has few commercial opportunities in a sport that only gains attention every four years. “I’m almost 30 now and I’m in the top three in the world,” he said in an interview with the Daily Mail. “So I’ll do whatever I can to get some extra money. I’ve got something that people want and I’ll happily try to sell it. It’s a really good way to make some extra money.”
Regarding his involvement with the platform that offers adult content, Laugher revealed that it was his father who encouraged him to try this option. “When I was younger, my father would say to me: ‘If you win an Olympic gold medal, it’s worth a million pounds.’ But it’s nowhere near that figure, and I can say that as someone who won an Olympic gold medal. He would also say to me: ‘Post things on Instagram, but when the product is free, like Instagram, you are the product,’” he said.
The Briton entered OnlyFans in September 2021 and has since maintained an active presence with 570 photos, 54 videos and thousands of likes and subscribers who pay between £7.75 (almost $10) and £42 ($54) to view his content.
In his latest video on July 14, Laugher informed his followers that his activity on the platform would be reduced due to his participation in Paris 2024. “I can’t wait to compete in the Olympics. Obviously, with the competition coming up, I’m going to be less active. I’ve cut back a bit on my activity leading up to these Games anyway,” he detailed.
Laugher’s story reflects the financial challenges many athletes face and their ability to find innovative alternatives to supplement their income while still pursuing athletic excellence.
