The Paris 2024 Olympic Games have just begun and some teams have already arrived at the sporting event embroiled in controversy. This is the case of the United States fencing team, which was recently accused of alleged match-fixing.
The information was published by the newspaper USA Today who reports that Maia Chamberlain, the alternate for the fencing team, accused her teammate Tatiana Nazlymov of manipulating a match, as well as denouncing “misconduct by referees” in the Olympic qualifying match.
In addition, Nora Burke, another American fencer, came out to support Chamberlain’s accusation in this alleged case of match-fixing in fencing.
On the other hand, there is also a similar complaint in the men’s fencing team. Andrew Doddo has accused Mitchell Saron of fixing matches prior to the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Fencing Federation will continue its investigation into the qualifying matches that took place in the months leading up to the Games, in which match-fixing was allegedly committed.
As for the parties involved, on July 20, at the press conference prior to the Olympics, the American fencing delegation preferred not to present Nazlymov at the event and it was Chamberlain herself who made an appearance.
Questions about the case continued to arrive, but the fencer responded that “right now the investigation is still going on, but we are focused on the Games to try to do it as well as possible.”
