The 2024 Copa América, held in the United States, has broken audience records, especially in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and the host country. The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) revealed that more than 1.6 million spectators attended the 32 matches of the tournament.
The competition, which took place from June 20 to July 14, included ten South American teams and six from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf). “The tournament broke records in all aspects that we measure in terms of reach,” Juan Emilio Roa, Conmebol’s commercial and marketing director, told EFE.
“We have broken audience records in Argentina and Brazil,” added Roa, also highlighting the impressive results in Colombia and the remarkable activity on social media.
According to Conmebol statistics, 84.6 million people watched the Copa América matches in Brazil, which represented an 82% increase in the audience rate compared to 2021. In Argentina, which revalidated its title as champion, the final reached an audience of 58.98%. The semi-final between Argentina and Canada had a rating of 58.64%, equaling the record of the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In Colombia, the runner-up of the tournament, the final became the most watched event, with an audience of 28.4 points, while the semi-final against Uruguay reached 25.5 points. The audience in Colombia grew by 30% compared to the 2021 edition of the Copa América.
In Venezuela, the match against Canada reached a rating of 54.25 points and an audience share of 90.85%. In Uruguay, signal coverage reached 90% of the country’s households. In Chile, the match against Argentina was watched by 8.6 million viewers, with a rating of 28.6 points and 52% of the total audience.
