US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has raised more than $200 million and recruited an army of 170,000 new volunteers for her campaign in less than a week, showing the enthusiasm her candidacy has generated.
According to data released by her team on Sunday, Harris has raised $200 million in less than a week, since US President Democrat Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign on July 21 and asked Americans to vote for her in November.
Of that $200 million, 66% came from Americans who decided to donate to the campaign for the first time.
In recent days, Harris’ campaign has also recruited more than 170,000 new volunteers who were able to participate in a “weekend of action” on Saturday and Sunday with neighborhood meetings, community meals and door-to-door visits to mobilize voters.
According to the campaign, volunteers have also been making phone calls to Spanish-speaking voters.
Specifically, this weekend alone, 2,300 events have been organized in the states considered key for the elections, including Arizona and Nevada, where the vote of the Latino community could play a crucial role, as well as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Georgia.
The fervor surrounding Harris’ candidacy has been reflected in polls, including a survey released Thursday by The New York Times and Siena College.
That poll puts former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump (2017-2021) one percentage point ahead of Harris, with 48% of support versus 47%.
That figure represents a significant improvement from the latest poll by The New York Times and Siena College, released earlier this month, in which Trump was six percentage points ahead of Biden.
