AC Milan have won their first pre-season match on US soil by beating Manchester City 3-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York in front of more than 54,000 spectators.
Both teams took to the field in their traditional sky blue and ‘Rossonero’ uniforms, while for the second half they presented the alternative kit that they will use throughout the 2024-25 season in their respective competitions.
Manchester City sent on most of their stars from the start, including Erling Haaland, who opened the scoring after 18 minutes, pushing Oscar Bobb’s effort into the back of the net.
Milan reacted in the first half to turn the score around thanks to a double from Lorenzo Colombo, recently arrived from Monza, who levelled the score with a header after half an hour of play and momentarily came back 5 minutes later with a volley from inside the area that slipped between Ederson’s legs.
In the second half, and now wearing their alternative uniforms, City also found an answer in the head of Jame McAtee, who got ahead of his weak marker to temporarily equalise.
However, Marco Nasti, another of the Rossoneri’s newcomers, gave them the victory with the third goal of the afternoon with a great first-time shot from the half-moon area that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Milan secured their first win of the pre-season, after an earlier draw against Rapid Vienna, while City have now suffered their second defeat, having also lost in the United States to Celtic.
This friendly was marked by the multiple absences from both teams of players who competed in international tournaments this summer.
Players such as Rodri, Julián Álvarez and Kevin De Bruyne for Manchester City and Álvaro Morata and Théo Hernández for Milan did not participate in this match.
Americans Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah did have a few minutes in the final minutes for Milan, and were greeted with great applause by the New York crowd.
This match is part of the Soccer Champions Tour, an initiative that in recent years has brought prestigious European teams to the United States during the preseason.
