French striker Kylian Mbappé not only revolutionised the world of football with his move to Real Madrid, the latest winner of the Champions League, which is seeking to establish a hegemony with the signing of the 25-year-old French striker.
He also surprised with his entrepreneurial outlook, to the point of expanding his investment package and being one step away from becoming the majority owner of a traditional club in his country.
According to Le Parisien, the new Real Madrid player will become a majority shareholder in SM Caen, a club in the French second division, where he tried out in 2013 and ultimately failed. The deal, according to French media, was closed at more than $15 million dollars.
Mbappé is expected to acquire 80% of Stade Malherbe, replacing the American investment fund Oaktree. The transaction will be carried out through the family company KM7, managed by his mother Fayza Lamari, who manages her son’s business.
This sum will be added to the more than $5 million previously invested by the current chairman of the supervisory board, Pierre-Antoine Capton, who will remain a minority shareholder. Capton had already made this outlay prior to the review of the club’s financial situation by the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG).
Sixth in the last championship, SM Caen will continue their fight in Ligue 2 for the sixth consecutive year. Although Mbappé is expected to play a minor role in the club’s operations, it has been decided that Ziad Hammoud, former director of strategy and investments at beIN Media Group and current general manager of the company that manages the French player’s image rights, will take on the role of senior manager of the club.
This financial move will allow Mbappé to have a significant influence on the administration and future direction of the team. Despite the little time he can devote to day-to-day life due to his commitments with Real Madrid and his career as a footballer, the planning involves delegating to his family and the aforementioned Ziad Hammoud.
Founded in 1913, SM Caen was considered one of the most important amateur clubs in France and is considered multi-sport; it is not only focused on football.
When he turned professional, he had his moments of glory, for example finishing second in the French Cup in the 2004-2005 season. He has spent ten seasons in Ligue 1, with a fourth place as his best position.
