Residents of the Petare neighborhood, the largest slum in Venezuela and one of the largest in Latin America, took to the streets on Monday to protest the alleged electoral fraud committed by the National Electoral Council.

The electoral body declared Nicolás Maduro Moros the winner of the July 28 elections, who supposedly obtained more than 5 million votes, which generated indignation among citizens, who are certain that the winner was the opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.

The residents of Petare expressed their discontent by banging pots and pans and chanting slogans in protest of what they consider to be the theft of the electoral process. The crowd gathered at various key points in Petare, making clear their discontent and demand for transparency in the results.

Petare has seen a significant change in political support due to the worsening economic crisis and problems with public services. In previous elections, Chavismo achieved large victories in this populous neighborhood. However, the current situation reflects a decline in Nicolás Maduro’s popularity in these sectors.
