Mexican-American boxer David Benavídez recently spoke out about the fight between former undisputed super middleweight champion Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez and Edgar Berlanga; he said that the matchup will not generate any pleasure among sports fans and could turn out to be a real fraud.
These statements were made by the ‘Mexican Monster’ during an interview with 2Tonedasupastar, where he considered that this confrontation between Canelo and Berlanga seems like a real “garbage” since the challenger from Guadalajara does not have any sporting appeal and much less merit to be his next rival.
“It’s a trash fight. I don’t think anyone wants to see that, but at the end of the day, I think Canelo doesn’t face the toughest opponents. It is what it is,” Benavídez said in his statements.
The ‘Monster’s’ words are also due to the annoyance that Benavídez has with Canelo Álvarez for not having accepted the constant requests to be able to face him despite having been named as his mandatory rival by the World Boxing Council (WBC) at 168 pounds.
“Activate the mandatory? I’ve been his mandatory for three years now, but I can’t force a man to fight me. We wouldn’t even have to get to the point where you have to activate the mandatory, what is the interim title for? Basically, that’s activating the mandatory. There are a lot of weird things going on with that. But at the end of the day, I have to move forward with my career,” he detailed.
Finally, David Benavídez said that he wants to be able to return to the ring next November and hinted that his possible next rival would be the British Anthony Yarde.
“I want to come back in November, and (Anthony) Yarde would be a great fight, and any of them. Right now, I can fight anyone, it doesn’t matter,” the fighter concluded.
