The New York Red Bulls were unable to secure a win on Tuesday and were eliminated by Pachuca of Liga MX in the Leagues Cup, after tying 1-1 in the regular 90 minutes and subsequently losing 5-4 in the penalty shootout in the match played at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

The Red Bulls dominated for much of the match, which allowed them to take the lead through player Elias Manoel, in the 47th minute of the match, after a mistake in Pachuca’s exit, but despite having several dangerous chances that would have assured the victory, they were unable to convert those actions.

This allowed Pachuca to score in the 56th minute through the team’s Venezuelan top scorer, Salomón Rondón, who capitalized on an error by the home team’s left back, Kyle Duncan.

Since then, both teams tried to go in search of the winning goal, but it was not possible, so they went to penalties to determine which team would take the additional point after the draw.

In the penalty shootout, both teams showed great precision, with only errors from Lewis Morgan (Red Bulls) and Colombian Nelson Deossa, before going into sudden death, where Dylan Nealis missed for the New Yorkers, allowing Mexican Sergio de los Ríos to score the final score of 5-4 and the Tuzos’ qualification to the round of 32.

With this result, Pachuca (two points) will face Toronto FC (two points and also qualified) next Sunday to determine the champion of Group 6 East of the Leagues Cup.
