After tests found a sample of Boar’s Head deli meats were contaminated with the strain responsible for a deadly Listeria outbreak, the company has expanded its recall to include an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.
The Jarratt, Virginia-based company announced the expanded recall on July 30, including liverwurst products due to a Listeria monocytogenes risk, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported on its website.
The recall includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brands.
These include meat items intended for cutting in retail delicatessens, as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold in retail establishments across the country. Some were exported to the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama.
Information about recalled foods
Foods have “use by” dates ranging from July 29, 2024, to October 17, 2024. Products shipped to retailers bear the establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.
L. monocytogenes contamination was discovered after the Maryland Department of Health, in collaboration with the Baltimore City Health Department, collected an unopened liverwurst product from a retail store for testing as part of an outbreak investigation; the product sample tested positive for the outbreak strain and FSIS was notified.
Health officials are working together to investigate a multistate outbreak of L. monocytogenes infections linked to sliced meats at delicatessens.
The FSIS case report indicates that as of July 30, 2024, the total number of sick people is 34 in 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths.
The affected individuals were evaluated by collecting samples from May 29, 2024 to July 12, 2024.
Additionally, the company is recalling charcuterie products that were produced on the same line and on the same day as the liver pate because they may be contaminated with Listeria.
