A Nevada prison is on lockdown after a stabbing incident left several inmates dead, prison officials say.
The Nevada Department of Corrections said three inmates were killed in the altercation and several others were injured at the state prison in Ely.
The department reported that nine criminals were taken for medical treatment.
No officers were injured, the NDOC said.
NDOC Director James Dzurenda was at the prison on Tuesday afternoon to receive information about the incident.
Gov. Joe Lombardo’s office said the incident was gang-related.
The Department of Corrections also declined to provide the names of the dead inmates or details about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.
The state agency added that it is working with several state and local law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations into the fatal stabbing.
The department includes multiple facilities in the Reno and Las Vegas areas, as well as in Ely, which is about ten miles from the Nevada-Utah state line.
