Less than 24 hours before he is presented to the Mexican national team on Thursday, Javier Aguirre spoke about his return to Mexico for a third cycle as coach.
Through the national team’s official media, El Vasco relies on the old saying that third attempts are always synonymous with victory. In this sense, the veteran coach said that it was the perfect time to return to El Tri, since he believes he can do something for his country.
“I feel that it is time, after 22 years of being around, to return to my country and do something for it. I am in a good emotional and physical state, with a good background to contribute and join this national team project for the World Cup in Mexico,” he said.
Support for Jaime Lozano
Aguirre also confessed that he supported Jaime Lozano’s process at the head of El Tri, but said he was not unaware of the implications that a position like that of coach currently has in football. The Basque highlighted that he
“I am convinced that projects should be allowed to finish and I supported Jaime unconditionally until the end, until the World Cup. It happens that, as happens in this position, the results are the ones that rule and decisions are made and in that sense they decide to dispense with Jaime and they call me and it is difficult to say no to the Mexican National Team,” he said.
2002 and 2010 World Cups
Javier Aguirre was Mexico’s coach at the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In both, he was harshly criticized for the performance of the national team. A fact that the coach himself admits left its mark on him.
“There are two moments that left a mark on me, which are the failures in two World Cups. The first was in 2002 against the United States, and I take responsibility for creating a different tactical scheme that we hadn’t even worked on, and in 2010, I went out to the press conference before the game with a cap on because I was angry with the people because they had given us up for dead without even playing,” he confessed.
