Opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia said he remains “firmly on the side of the people” of Venezuela, four days after the elections in which he says he can prove his victory against his nine opponents, including President Nicolás Maduro, who according to the National Electoral Council (CNE) won the elections on July 28.

“I remain firmly on the side of the people. I will never leave them alone, and I will always defend their will! Long live Venezuela. Glory to the Brave People,” said the former ambassador in a brief and unique message published this year on the social network X.

The opposition politician, along with the other nine politicians who participated in last Sunday’s elections, was summoned to appear on Friday, August 2, at 2:00 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT), before the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

Demonstrations for the weekend

The Supreme Court is chaired by Chavista Caryslia Rodríguez, who announced an investigation to certify, in an unrestricted manner, the results of the elections, in response to an appeal filed by Maduro.

González Urrutia has not commented on the matter, nor has his main ally, former deputy María Corina Machado, who called on citizens to participate in demonstrations in all regions of the country on Saturday against the official election results.

The CNE, which claimed to have suffered a cyber attack on its system, has not published the complete results – contrary to regulations – since it declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, despite the fact that 20% of the voting records were still to be counted, which is equivalent to more than two million votes that could change the outcome.

The majority opposition, grouped in the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), insists that Edmundo González won the elections, and created a website with the electoral records in which they demonstrate their claim.

The US recognizes that Edmundo González won the elections

María Corina Machado insisted on the need to reiterate that the PUD won and to express in the streets the disagreement with the official bulletin, also questioned by the Carter Center, which warned that the Venezuelan election cannot be considered democratic.

The United States recognized Edmundo González as the winner of the elections in Venezuela.

“In the face of overwhelming evidence and millions of votes cast, Maduro must recognize Edmundo González as the winner of the July 28 election. And the world must recognize his victory as well,” said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS).
