The trainer and father of Mexican boxer Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, Isaac Cruz Sr., sparked controversy surrounding his son after asking American fighter Gervonta Davis to “put on his pants” and finally decide whether or not he will accept a rematch against the world champion in order to begin negotiations about this fight, which have been extended due to the ‘Tank’s’ inactivity in giving a concrete response.
These statements were made by Mr. Cruz during an interview with Izquierdazo, where he acknowledged that more than two years have passed since the first confrontation between these two figures and that despite many approaches from his team, they have still not been able to arrange a rematch; in light of this fact, he emphasized that Davis must make a quick decision on this matter so that they can begin to look for a new opponent.
“So they should put their pants on and make the decision to fight, not just say yes on social media or in interviews. I hope that this rematch takes place for the good of boxing and all the public who want to see it, and the media and promoters,” he said.
The father of the World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight champion said that Gervonta Davis does not want to have a rematch against Pitbull because he was left in a bad position in their fight in 2021.
“Everyone says, supposedly Gervonta says he wants the fight, (but) we don’t know to what extent it is true, but what we do know is that everyone wants the fight. It seems a little strange to me because before fighting Rolly (Romero) we were waiting for Gervonta’s response, which took too long, that’s why the Pitbull stopped, because he was saying yes, no,” he detailed.
“So right now we don’t feel the need for a rematch with him, if he doesn’t want it, then it won’t happen. Why? Because in his career he had never been made to look as bad as Pitbull did,” said Isaac Cruz.
Finally, Isaac Cruz Sr. explained that if the rematch between the two figures were to take place, it could easily take place between 135 or 140 pounds; they could also reach a fixed weight if that convinces Gervonta.
“I think that would be a matter of discussion, because Pitbull can go down to 135, Gervonta can go up to 140, it could even be a negotiated weight, it could be agreed or at 140. It would be a rather long negotiation, but hopefully a good agreement will be reached. Yes, with a month you already saw what he did, now with two or three months of preparation things will change. And his trainer and Gervonta’s team are very clear about that, that’s why they are very hesitant to take revenge with Pitbull,” he concluded.
