Gun violence is a constant in New York, with some victims being targeted at random on the streets, in schools, on public transport and in businesses. Clashes are often linked to a battle between gang members for territory, and suspects often incriminate themselves by bragging and posting about their crimes on social media.

This week a 20-year-old man was arrested as a suspect in the fatal shooting of Troy Gill (13) as he returned home after a Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays Center, in apparent revenge between gang members.

Also this week Anthony Santiesteban (32) was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for shooting dead a mother in a parking lot in Long Island (NY). At the end of July a young immigrant worker for the Papa John’s chain was shot in the head outside his home in the Bronx while he was planning to travel soon on vacation to the Dominican Republic with his wife.
