Left-handed pitcher Blake Snell threw his first career no-hitter Friday, striking out 10 in the San Francisco Giants’ 3-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner walked three on 114 pitches, 78 of which were for strikes. It was his first complete game in 202 major league starts.
He also only issued three walks: Tyler Stephenson, Jeimer Candelario and TJ Friedl.
Snell, 31, recorded the 18th no-hitter in San Francisco history and third of the major league season.
Cincinnati’s first innings were the players who suffered the most against Snell’s pitching. Jonathan India struck out in three of his four at-bats while Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer each had two strikeouts.
The last three outs were obtained by a strikeout against Santiago Espinal, a 1-3 grounder by India and a De La Cruz line drive straight to Mike Yastrzemski’s glove.
It took nine years and almost two months for the San Francisco Giants to celebrate a no-hitter again.
The last time the Bay Area franchise had achieved a no-hitter was thanks to Chris Heston, in 2015, when the pitcher was in charge of blanking the New York Mets.
Houston’s Ronel Blanco recorded the first no-hitter of the year against Toronto and San Diego’s Dylan Cease threw a no-hitter on July 25 against Washington.
