Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has a slight lead nationally over former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday.
Harris would have the support of 50% of voters surveyed, while Trump has 49%.
However, this difference is within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 points, indicating a very close competition between the two candidates, Efe reports.
The poll found that more Democrats and African-American voters said they would “definitely vote” in the upcoming election. However, Harris will need to continue generating enthusiasm, especially in key states, to maintain her slim lead over Donald Trump.
The poll was conducted between July 30 and August 2 and surveyed approximately 3,102 registered voters across the United States.
On the other hand, CNN published an average of four recent national polls, including the CBS poll, which indicates that Trump has 49% support to Harris’s 47%. These results suggest a tight race and point to the importance of every vote in the upcoming electoral contest.
President Joe Biden had dropped out of the presidential race on July 21, ceding the spot to Kamala Harris after facing pressure from his party’s internal and donor base following a contentious election debate with Donald Trump on June 27.
