After eluding an Olympic gold medal for nearly 16 years, Novak Djokovic’s illustrious career was crowned on Sunday with the last trophy the Serbian needed to consolidate his position as the greatest tennis player of all time and the most successful in history.
At the 2024 Paris Games, Djokovic finally won the long-awaited medal after beating Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 7-6 (3) and 7-6 (2), thus completing all the titles that a tennis player can aspire to in his professional career.
The Serbian thus has his Golden Slam: the four Grand Slams and the gold medal at the Olympic Games, an honour he shares with Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.
Nole won gold on the prestigious centre court of Roland Garros, scoring incredible points that thrilled the crowd at the Philippe Chatrier. The key to the Serbian’s victory was in the two tie-breaks, where the Serbian took advantage of the pressure of the match.
After becoming the player with the most Grand Slam titles (24) and the one who spent the most weeks at number 1, Djokovic became the oldest tennis player (37 years) to win the gold medal.
Now, Djokovic can boast of his Olympic gold, won in his fifth attempt after three failed semi-finals and a bronze in Beijing, which seemed a humiliation amid so many successes.
