The now former Real Madrid midfielder and player who recently announced his retirement from football, Toni Kroos, became Germany’s best player for the 2023-2024 world football season on Monday.

In a ceremony organized by the German Sports Journalists’ Association in conjunction with Kicker magazine, Kroos was honored for his work with Real Madrid, with whom he also ended up finishing one of the best campaigns of his brief but successful career.

According to the German publication, the former Real Madrid player won, with 285 votes, over Bayer Leverkusen players Florian Wirtz (246) and Granit Xhaka (66), second and third respectively in the vote.

Kroos, who was also awarded the prize in 2018, told the magazine that the distinction is “a good confirmation and a great recognition of what I have achieved last year.”

Toni Kroos retired from professional football after the last European Championship, in which his team played at home and ended up losing in extra time in the quarter-finals to a Spain that ended up being crowned champion of the edition.

Just a month earlier, he had won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid.
