The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 5.2 earthquake that struck Kern County, California, near Bakersfield, on Tuesday night.
The quake was centered in the Mettler area around 9:09 p.m. The agency upgraded the quake’s magnitude from 5.1. The quake was in an unincorporated area in Kern County, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) from downtown Los Angeles.
Several aftershocks were recorded
Authorities in Los Angeles and other affected communities were checking for damage to infrastructure. USGS said there were several aftershocks after the 3.0 earthquake in the Lamont and Grapevine areas, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Shake Alert earthquake warning system alerted seconds before the shaking.
The Associated Press said the quake was felt at Dodger Stadium midway through the seventh inning of a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, but the quake did not elicit any noticeable reaction from the crowd.
Firefighters remove fire equipment
The Kern County Fire Department issued a statement saying fire personnel had removed firefighting equipment from apparatus compartments, per KCFD procedures. They will conduct windshield inspections of their districts.
About 826 people reported feeling the quake on the USGS website. Authorities have not yet reported any injuries.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services reported that state and local emergency response teams are monitoring the impacts of the earthquake.
