Mexican-born quarterback Luis Pérez has joined the Los Angeles Chargers for the 2024 NFL season, the Californian team announced on its social media.
In a short message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Chargers announced the signing of a contract with Pérez, who is 29 years old and has just shone in the United Football League (UFL), seeing action with the Arlington Renegades.
In that league he finished as one of the best of the season, being the leader in completed passes (225), passing yards (2,309) and touchdowns (18).
A season earlier, in 2023, he helped the Renegades win the championship in which he was named Most Valuable Player of that game.
The San Diego, California-born quarterback was a standout in college football for Texas A&M-Commerce in 2017, winning the NCAA Division II national championship. He passed for 5,011 yards and 46 touchdowns that season, a record for his division.
His first experience in the NFL came in 2018, when he was hired as an undrafted agent by the Los Angeles Rams, a franchise in which he was on the practice squad.
A year later he played for the Birmingham Iron of another alternative league, the Alliance of American Football (AAF), before returning to the NFL with the practice squads of the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.
After his outstanding performances last year with the Arlington Renegades, the Chargers called him up to their training camp, and he impressed with his performances, prompting him to sign with the team where he will wear the number 11 jersey as one of the backups to starter Justin Herbert.
