A player from the Australian field hockey team participating in the Paris Olympics was arrested on Tuesday night by French police after being caught buying cocaine on the street, the French capital’s prosecutor’s office reported in a statement reported by EFE.
Although the prosecution did not reveal his name, several media outlets have identified the player as Thomas Craig, 28, who played in the quarter-final match last Sunday, in which Australia lost to the Netherlands.
The incident took place in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, at the foot of a building, where police officers witnessed the transaction and proceeded to arrest both the seller and the buyer of the cocaine.
Due to the quantities of drugs seized, the investigation has been assigned to the Police Narcotics Brigade. This specialized unit will be responsible for carrying out the necessary procedures to clarify the facts and determine the corresponding responsibilities.
The arrest of Craig, a high-profile athlete, has generated a huge media stir and could have significant implications for both his career and the reputation of the Australian hockey team. The news also highlights the challenges facing authorities in combating drug trafficking and drug use at major international events such as the Olympics.
Craig’s situation adds to a series of incidents involving athletes during the Games, underlining the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct and the need to strengthen prevention and control measures to prevent similar episodes from happening again.
