This Saturday’s round of high jump at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games could have gone down in history as a discipline with two winners, but American Shelby McEwen gave up on the idea of winning the gold medal alongside Hamish Kerr and ended up losing to the New Zealander in the play-off round.
During the high jump final, both McEwen and Kerr were fighting for gold and both finished tied with a jump of 2.36 meters, which would have given both the possibility of winning the gold medal.
The possible definition already had a precedent and that is that in Tokyo 2020, in the face of the tie between the Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim and the Italian Gianmarco Tamberi, both ended with both taking the gold medal and climbing to the top of the podium against all odds, but on this occasion it was the American who wanted to decide his future in the discipline itself.
In fact, seconds before the final tie, Kerr had the chance to overtake McEwen but preferred to make a jump with a deliberate foul in order to end the match tied and decide the game under the two gold medals.
Despite this, McEwen continued with his intention of winning on the field and after both failed in the attempts of 2.38 and 2.36, Kerr ended up achieving the jump of 2.34 meters to win the gold medal.
