Iconic illusionist David Copperfield, known for his impressive magic shows and acts, is at the center of a legal controversy. According to recent reports, Copperfield is being sued for $2.5 million by the board of directors of a Manhattan condominium, following alleged vandalism of his luxurious New York penthouse.
According to People, Copperfield was accused by the board of directors of The Galleria Condominium for abandoning the property in 2018 and leaving it with multiple damages.
The complaint filed on August 6 specifies that the property in question is a penthouse located in a luxury building, worth about $7.4 million, on East 57th Street. The 67-year-old celebrity moved there in 1997, but then transferred it in 2018 to the company Sky Tower.
The legal documents detail a series of alleged damages, including a completely damaged bathtub, rusty faucets, moldy walls and ceilings affected by humidity. The lawsuit demands that the magician pay for the repair of the deterioration of the apartment, which also caused damage to neighboring properties.
“He refuses to take these issues seriously,” making only “superficial repairs to the real problems,” the board says, adding that his “motivation for trashing his own apartment and allowing it to deteriorate is not entirely clear, especially when he still owns the unit and is marketing it for sale.”
Copperfield, known for his elaborate productions and magic acts, has yet to issue an official statement on the case. However, a representative for the magician said the damage seen in the images is not actual and is a matter of an insurance claim against the property.
“The photographs included in the lawsuit do not reflect the current state of the apartment. This is a judicial matter and will be handled in court,” the attorney told People.
This recent legal problem adds an unexpected twist to the life of the illusionist, who remains an influential figure in the entertainment world.
The lawsuit has captured the attention of the public and her fans, who are waiting to find out the outcome of the case.
