Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who takes over as captain following the recent departure of Sergi Roberto, said on Monday that both Roberto and former coach Xavi Hernández will be remembered “as legends of the club.”
The German goalkeeper spoke of the former captain and last season’s coach, who left the club after a year in which the team failed to win any titles.
“We want to thank Xavi and his coaching staff for everything they have done for the club and for their dedication, and Sergi Roberto for everything he has achieved with the club of his life,” said Ter Stegen in his speech prior to the Joan Gamper Trophy, in which Barcelona lost to Monaco.
This match will also mark the debut of new coach Hansi Flick at the Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys, after having made his debut in the dugout during the pre-season tour in America.
“We are starting the new season with great enthusiasm. We welcome Flick and his team and we look forward to achieving many successes together,” said Ter Stegen.
Hansi Flick also had a few words for the fans who came to Montjuïc to welcome the team: “I am very happy to be here, and we are working hard to achieve our goals. With your support, we will be stronger. Long live Barça!” said the German coach.
