The new sporting discipline that debuted at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Breakdancing, could have its days numbered after its presence was not structured for the next Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028.

According to multiple reports from specialized portals, Los Angeles 2028 will dispense with Breakdancing, which was approved as a sport a few years ago by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to give an opportunity to other disciplines that have already been part of the Olympic cycle or that will debut in the Californian city.

As part of the home team’s status, the organizing committee has the power to add or remove disciplines they deem necessary, just as happened in Paris 2024 with Breakdance or the withdrawal of Olympic baseball and softball.

New sports expected to be added to the Los Angeles 2028 schedule include the return of baseball and softball, the addition of cricket (a return after 128 years), and the debut of lacrosse, squash and flash football (similar to American football but without contact).

Breakdancing had been trending in recent days following the competition in Paris 2024, especially after the participation of Rachael Gunn, the Australian official who took possession of the quota that corresponded to the Asian country and who, after her performance, was the subject of multiple mockery and memes on social media.

The harassment of Gunn was so serious that the World Breakdance Federation (WDSF) spoke out and called for an end to any type of action that contributes to the harassment of any other person in the discipline.

“WDSF stands firmly against any form of harassment or abuse, including cyberbullying. Our athletes deserve respect and support as they pursue their dreams. Breaking is part of Hip Hop culture, and we would love to uphold the values of Peace, Love, Unity and Fun. Let us treat every athlete with respect and create a supportive environment for all,” said the head of the world body.

To date, of all the sports that have been added or removed from the Olympic schedule, only swimming, athletics and fencing have been contested at every Olympic Games since their first edition in 1896.
