The 2024/2025 European football season is about to get underway. Even for Real Madrid, it will start a little earlier when they face Europa League champions Atalanta in the European Super Cup on Wednesday.
The white team will have a busy schedule this season. Because of its status as champion of the Champions League and the Spanish league, this 2024/2025 season Real Madrid will play six tournaments throughout the campaign.
European Super Cup (one-off match), Spanish Super Cup, which is a sort of semi-final and final. The three usual competitions of the season (League, Champions League and Copa del Rey) and in December the Intercontinental Cup will be added.
Given this tight schedule, some Real Madrid players have complained about the excessive number of matches. For Real Madrid this season, this number could exceed 72.
The first to complain about this tight schedule was Dani Carvajal, Real Madrid’s second captain, who expressed his displeasure at a press conference prior to the Super Cup match against Atalanta.
“It doesn’t make any sense. It’s impossible for us to maintain an optimal level. With the Intercontinental Cup, the Club World Cup, and FIFA dates in between,” said the right-back who has just won the European Championship with Spain.
Carvajal continued his complaint by calling on the organizers to ease the schedule for the next seasons. “It is impossible to play 72 games. The appropriate bodies should analyze this. Those who do not suffer are us and our families,” he emphasized.
Another of Real Madrid’s captains, Federico Valverde, also supported Carvajal in this complaint about the excessive schedule they will have to face in the upcoming season.
“I agree with Dani. And we also have to travel 12 hours to America. This year we trained much less. We try to do our best, but sometimes our body gets saturated and it is complicated,” replied the Uruguayan.
For now, Real Madrid will begin its season facing Atalanta in the European Super Cup and just four days later it will make its debut in the Spanish LaLiga against Mallorca as a visitor.
