Singer Miley Cyrus became the youngest person to be honored with the Disney Legend Award, a recognition that highlights artists who have left an indelible mark on Disney history. The award was presented during a ceremony held as part of the D23 fan convention, which brought together prominent figures from the entertainment industry.
Miley, known for her iconic portrayal of “Hannah Montana” in the eponymous series, was reduced to tears as she accepted the award. In her speech, the singer and actress expressed her deep gratitude and nostalgia for the time she spent working with Disney.
“I am the one who tells you what you are not supposed to know. And what I mean is that legends are afraid too. It is legendary to be afraid and to dare anyway. When you try, failure does not exist,” she said.
“In my heart, I was Hannah Montana. Montana and I are so proud to receive this award. This award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing, loyal fans, everyone who has made my dream come true,” Cyrus added through tears in a vindication of her first big hit with “Hannah Montana.”
The Disney Legend Award is one of the highest honors the company bestows, and its presentation to Miley Cyrus underscores the lasting influence she has had on the brand and in the hearts of fans of all ages. The ceremony, filled with memories and emotions, celebrated not only Cyrus’ professional achievements, but also the personal impact she has had on the lives of many through her work with Disney.
The 31-year-old actress also received the award along with 13 other artists who have had a significant impact on the company’s legacy in different areas.
At the gala, held in Anaheim, California, hosted by Ryan Seacrest and filled with references to the honorees’ work, filmmaker James Cameron, author of the “Avatar” saga, also received an award.
Actresses Jamie Lee Curtis, who starred in several of the company’s projects, and Angela Bassett took the stage for the tribute.
Harrison Ford, the legendary Han Solo from Star Wars and soon to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had an emotional moment on screen as they looked back on his time in the “Indiana Jones” franchise since 1981.
Disney also honored six behind-the-scenes creatives who have contributed to groundbreaking films, art and experiences, including Colleen Atwood.
Iconic Star Wars film composer John Williams and producer and co-creator James L. Brooks were celebrated.
Also in attendance were Mark Henn, a noted animator; Steve Ditko, the late comic book artist known for characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange; and Frank Oz, legendary puppeteer and filmmaker.
At the end of the ceremony, the honorees left their footprints and wrote their names on plaques that will rest in Disney’s Legends Plaza in Burbank.
