Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter has filed a $2.5 million countersuit against Melissa Schuman, the woman who accused him of sexual abuse. In the suit, Carter claims that the accusations made by the woman are false and have caused significant damage to his reputation and career, reported media outlets such as People and Variety.
Melissa Schuman, former lead singer of the group Dream, filed an initial lawsuit alleging that the singer sexually assaulted her in an incident in 2003 while the two were filming the teen horror movie “The Hollow” in Los Angeles.
She said Carter asked her out the day after filming. She, then 18, went with her roommate Rachel Green to Carter’s apartment in Santa Monica, California, where he and his friend, Tony Bass, made them drinks.
According to Melissa, the singer slipped a sedative into her drink and, after inviting her to listen to new music in his office, began kissing her. He then took her into the bathroom and performed oral sex on her despite her protests. After Bass knocked on the door, Carter moved into another bathroom with Schuman and forced her to continue performing sexual acts on him.
In the countersuit, Carter denies that he and Schuman had consensual sex, which his friend Tony Bass overheard. His friend recalls that the evening was “pleasant” and that he had no idea that any assault had occurred.
Melissa Schuman and Shannon Ruth are both featured in the documentary “Fallen Idols: Aaron and Nick Carter,” which premiered in May. The four-part series features testimony from the two women, as well as a third named Ashley Repp, who have also accused Carter of sexual assault.
In December 2022, Shannon Ruth filed a lawsuit against Nick in Clark County, Nevada, alleging that he forced her to perform oral sex on him after a Backstreet Boys concert in 2001.
The actor has taken legal action against the documentary series. “These are the same blatant allegations that led us to sue this cabal of conspirators,” Carter’s lawyer, Dale Hayes Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter. Nick Carter has also taken legal action against the producers of the documentary, citing the spreading of false accusations against him.
