Robert Tucker has been sworn in as the new commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), replacing Laura Kavanagh, Mayor Eric Adams announced. In this position, Tucker will oversee the day-to-day management of the agency’s 17,000 employees and $2 billion budget.
Mayor Adams said Commissioner Tucker brings to this position decades of experience in protecting public safety, as well as strong personal ties to the FDNY.
“His first job as a young man was in the FDNY communications office in Central Park, and I can think of no one who knows this department better,” the mayor said. “I am confident that Commissioner Tucker will continue Commissioner Kavanagh’s successful legacy of supporting our firefighters and protecting our city. New York City is grateful to have such an experienced leader ready to take the helm at this critical time.”
Previously, Tucker served as a Special Assistant District Attorney for Queens County and most recently as President and CEO of T&M Protection Resources, a recognized global leader in cyber security and intelligence solutions.
“Firefighters, EMTs and paramedics do the work most of us only read about in comic books. They are heroes and embody the best in all of us. My message to the members of the FDNY is simple: as you stand with New Yorkers, I stand with you,” said the new commissioner.
Council Member Joann Ariola noted that the New York City Fire Department has faced its fair share of challenges in recent years and will undoubtedly face a number of challenges in the future.
“With Mr. Tucker’s support and leadership, I am confident that New York’s bravest will be able to withstand whatever obstacles come their way in the years ahead and emerge stronger than ever,” she said.
