A Ventura County, California, sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized after being struck by a driver who was attempting to flee the scene after being pulled over during a traffic stop, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. near Ventura Avenue and Kellogg Street. According to a statement from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by ABC News station KABC in Los Angeles, the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver decided to flee, running over the deputy in the process.
The circumstances leading up to the traffic stop and the events that occurred before the crash are unclear, according to KABC. Authorities, meanwhile, confirmed that the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Suspect is actively sought
At this time, no description of the suspect or his vehicle has been provided. Investigators are looking for possible surveillance video in the area to assist in the identification and capture of the driver responsible.
The officer involved in the incident has not yet been publicly identified and his current health status has not been disclosed. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has assured that the investigation is ongoing and that all necessary steps are being taken to resolve the case.
