Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday that the offensive launched last week in the Russian border region of Kursk is advancing in several areas and that in some places along the front they have made progress of one or two kilometers since the start of the day.
“We have captured more than 100 Russian soldiers during this period,” Zelensky added in a message posted on social media, referring to a report on the situation provided by his commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Sirski.
“I am grateful to all those involved. This will speed up the return home of our boys and girls,” the Ukrainian president said in his message.
Ukraine has 74 Russian towns under control
At the same time, Zelensky warned that the military command will not forget “for a moment” the situation in the east of the country, where Russian forces are exerting great pressure on the Pokrovsk front, in the Donetsk region (east), with a total of 54 assaults recorded on Tuesday.
The president had reported yesterday evening that Ukraine had a total of 74 Russian towns under its control, where “inspections” and “stabilisation measures” were being carried out, while work was being done to make “humanitarian decisions”.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed yesterday that Ukraine “unlike Russia, does not need foreign territories” and that the aim of the incursion is to protect Ukrainian civilians in the border regions, while Zelensky himself has pointed out that the operation is intended to exert pressure on Moscow.
“We have not forgotten for a second about our eastern front. I have instructed the Commander-in-Chief to strengthen this direction using the equipment and supplies currently provided to us by our partners,” Zelensky wrote.
Russia says it has stopped Ukrainian advance
While Zelensky says his forces are continuing to advance, the Russian army has said it has “repelled” Ukrainian attacks that were trying to advance “deeply” in the Kursk border region, on the eighth day of an unprecedented offensive by Kiev troops on Russian territory. Something they had already announced last Sunday.
Russian forces, supported by aviation, drones and artillery, “repelled attempts by enemy mobile groups aboard armored vehicles to penetrate deep into Russian territory,” the army said in a statement.
