The US Secret Service has approved a plan to increase security and protection for former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump, which includes the use of bulletproof glass screens at his rallies, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Normally, such bulletproof sheets are only provided to presidents and vice presidents when it is considered necessary during their outdoor appearances in order to avoid any accident that puts the stability of the president at risk.
Donald Trump was shot in the ear by a young man at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The attacker was on a rooftop outside the venue and killed one member of the audience and wounded another before being shot down by law enforcement.
Events in closed places
The then director of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, ended up resigning ten days later due to security errors at that meeting and after having stated that this assassination attempt represented the “biggest operational failure” of the agency “in decades”.
Trump has not appeared at an outdoor campaign rally since July 13. Two days after the attack, he appeared at the Republican National Convention, but the venue was closed.
The Washington Post added that the Secret Service will also add other resources to its security detail that are not normally provided for presidential candidates.
They could include drones
The Secret Service official who revealed part of the plan did not go into details with the newspaper, but said “other measures” could include the use of drones.
ABC News added that it is unclear when the new deployment will come into effect.
Trump has publicly admitted his desire to return to outdoor events. “They would prefer us to be in a stadium, but we are not going to give up outdoor events,” he said.
“All those people we had to turn away today could have been at an outdoor event,” he said at a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 31.
