Argentine star Lionel Messi suffered a serious ankle injury in the 2024 Copa América final against Colombia. He was forced to leave the match minutes after it began.
Since then, the captain of the Albiceleste team has not been able to play his football on the pitch with the shirt of his club Inter Miami. Even the team from South Florida has suffered without Messi and was eliminated from the Leagues Cup at the hands of the Columbus Crew in the round of 16.
But the big question is when will Leo Messi return to play with Inter Miami? Although there is no exact date, an approximate date is estimated when the Argentine could return, and Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino gave an update on the status of the world champion in Qatar 2022,
Messi has a syndesmotic sprain, which involves a partial tear of the ligaments that connect the tibia to the fibula, and has already kept him out of action for more than a month. And according to Martino, despite his positive progress, he will be out for a few more weeks.
“Leo, as always, is on schedule, progressing. There is still no certainty about when he will be able to join the group. He continues to work separately,” Gerardo Martino said ahead of the match against Columbus Crew.
These words perfectly explain the current situation at the Florida institution: pure uncertainty, and no one knows when it will finally dissipate.
What is certain is that Messi will be absent for several more days, at least until September 14 when they face the Philadelphia Union in a match corresponding to Matchday 31 of the MLS. Tentative date on which Messi could see some minutes upon his return.
Inter Miami currently remains the leader of the MLS Eastern Conference with 53 points. Five points ahead of Cincinnati, which is in second place. There are still 10 rounds left in the regular season of the competition.
