Cruz Azul Machine footballer Giorgos Giakoumakis was quite sad about his team’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2024 Leagues Cup, which brings together teams from Liga MX and Major League Soccer (MLS) in the same venue with the aim of boosting both tournaments and thus being much more competitive in the rest of the international competitions.
Despite this tough loss, the Greek player highlighted the work the team has done since his arrival and stated that they will continue to improve in order to have a positive result in the Apertura 2024 tournament of the Liga MX in order to advance to the Liguilla of the tournament and thus fight for the championship title given the non-existent possibility of being able to lift the Leagues Cup trophy.
“The team spirit is always good, of course we wanted to come back with a title and that is the goal when you play for a club like this. We didn’t achieve it, we will rest for a few days and then we will get back to work because we have important matches in Liga MX,” he said.
Giakoumakis was confident that the team can improve in the upcoming matches under the command of Martín Anselmi; despite this, he did not want to talk about the points that affected the cement team during their match against Mazatlán; it is important to highlight that the Celestes arrived as favorites to that match that ended up being decided by the penalty shootout.
“That is something we have to discuss internally and hopefully the overall performance will have to change a little, but we will be better, we will work hard and we will be better,” the Greek player emphasized in his statements.
To finish, the player from the sky blue team talked about the feelings he has had since his arrival to Mexican football and considered that he still needs a little more time to be able to adapt in the best possible way with the entire squad and thus exploit his greatest potential; he said that until now everyone has been quite receptive and has helped him a lot to be able to feel at home.
“I’m very happy, I’m very happy so far, I just need a little bit of time, a few games to adjust 100% in the game and then I think everything will end well, but I’m very happy so far, everyone is trying to analyse the game we have to play and what I have to do in the team and they are very kind to me, so I’m very grateful and I hope more goals come in the future,” he concluded.
