The Premier League saw its first matchday with the duel between Bournemouth and Nottingham, where the Brazilian Danilo left the field of play before the quarter-hour mark due to a chilling injury.
Barely eight minutes had passed when the incident occurred: the 23-year-old Brazilian jumped to challenge Antoine Semenyo for the ball and misfooted his foot as he returned to the pitch, causing his left ankle to give way completely.
Quickly seeing the severity of the injury and the Nottingham player with his hand raised to ask for help, referee Michael Oliver stopped the match and called for assistance, who placed a tarpaulin around the player, whom his teammates looked at with a distraught expression.
Finally, after several minutes of being treated on the pitch, the English team’s medical staff carried the midfielder away on a stretcher, who left the pitch giving the thumbs up in an attempt to reassure his fans.
“It was a horrible moment for everyone, he broke his ankle,” said Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who added that it was a “serious injury” while stressing that the “good news” is that the player “is stable, talking and conscious.”
The game ended with a draw after Semenyo scored the equaliser (1-1) two minutes from time, taking advantage of an error by Nottingham’s defence on a corner kick: Harry Toffolo cleared it poorly in the six-yard box and the ball was left dead for the Bournemouth player to score.
Danilo was set to be a key player in Nuno Epíritu Santo’s midfield alongside Yates. Now, the Portuguese coach will have to do some work to cover his absence or look to the market again. However, they do not have much room for manoeuvre. Last season, they already received a four-point ban for skipping the FFP.
