Costa Rican striker Alonso Martínez scored the fastest goal in the brief history of the Leagues Cup on Saturday, scoring for his team, New York City FC (NYCFC), against Columbus Crew in the quarter-finals of the competition, scoring just 12 seconds into the match.
Just after the match started, the Columbus Crew, instead of moving forward to begin the first offensive, decided to pass the ball back to center back Rudy Camacho, who over-confidently ended up making the mistake that quickly put them down on the scoreboard.
As Camacho tried to turn the ball towards the right wing, the attacker Martínez put his foot out to intercept the ball and the rebound ended up being a few meters away for him to try and score the first goal of the match.
In the end, with goalkeeper Patrick Schulte in front, Martinez fired a well-placed shot to put his team up 1-0 and not only the fastest goal in Leagues Cup history, but also the fastest goal in NYCFC history.
Despite Martinez scoring in the 12th second, the goal is not the fastest in American soccer history because in 2015, Mike Grella, a player for the city rivals, New York Red Bulls, scored after six seconds against Philadelphia Union, capitalizing on an error in his opponents’ kick-off.
