With just under a month to go until the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Marvel’s only 2024 film has broken a new record in the current film scene: it has become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
According to official figures, the film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman surpassed the $1 billion mark at the international box office, reaching $1.085 billion through the first half of August.
This logically caused the production that held that title, 2019’s “Joker,” to take second place, in addition to “sending” the recent Oscar winner “Oppenheimer” to third place among the highest-grossing adult films in history.
No one stops “Deadpool & Wolverine”
According to reports, the third installment of the “Mercenary with a Mouth” has earned almost half of its current box office haul in US theaters with $516 million.
Meanwhile, the rest of its earnings, $568 million, come from theaters around the world.
In addition, the film directed by Shawn Levy managed to surpass the $1 billion mark in less time than “Joker.” However, the latter had the disadvantage of not being released in China, one of the most important markets for the film scene.
Following the news, Ryan Reynolds himself, who reportedly earned around $50 million for his role, celebrated the new record with a post on his social media.
Finally, the superhero film becomes the second highest-grossing film of the year, right after “Inside Out 2,” and is also the third Marvel production to surpass $1 billion since the release of “Avengers: End Game.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is expected to continue to increase its numbers in the following weeks. However, the arrival of the new film in the “Alien” saga, “Alien: Romulus,” could take the first place from Marvel’s production. Likewise, the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the new Tim Burton film and sequel to the 1980s film, could put an end to Deadpool’s box office on September 6.
It will be until the release of the second “Joker” film, on October 4, that it will be known whether “Deadpool & Wolverine” will be able to maintain its place or whether Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will once again take the top spot.
