Boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez revealed this Sunday that during negotiations with the promoters who organize the fights in which he participates, he always agrees that at least 80% of the profits from the fight go into his pocket.

In a recent conversation with the Sway’s Universe podcast, Canelo Álvarez revealed the details of the agreements under which he negotiates, explaining that his priority is always to ensure his profits and gave the example that even the profits from a soft drink in the arena also have a percentage that the Mexican keeps.

“I keep 80% of everything, but I put everything at risk because I know I generate a lot of money, that’s why I take 80% of all the profits, of everything, if you have a soft drink at the Arena, that money is for me,” said the Tapatío.

Canelo Alvarez’s comment came after the interviewer asked him for advice for those rookie boxers who want to win a purse like the ones he usually receives, after explaining that there are several boxers who generate a lot of money but do not receive the majority of the earnings.

Canelo Álvarez later explained that his life plan is to help other fighters who need to “learn about boxing” in the future, perhaps once his own career ends.

“I think if I can help the fighters, I will at some point, because you know, boxers always keep the least amount of money and some of the fighters really need to take the money, the guaranteed purse, a lot of times they don’t make a lot of money in the fight because there are fighters who make a lot of money and they get little and they need to learn about boxing,” said the winner of 61 fights in the professional ranks.

Canelo Álvarez is promoting his new fight that will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 17, facing Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga.
