In an increasingly competitive electoral scenario in the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris has achieved a slight advantage over former President Donald Trump in the race for the presidency, according to several polls published on Sunday.
According to a new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, Harris has 50 percent support among voters, compared to 45 percent for Trump, although the former president continues to lead on key issues such as the economy and immigration.
The poll shows Harris would lead Trump by 50% among adults overall, and 49% to 45% among registered voters.
Among likely voters, Harris’ lead widens slightly, reaching 51% to Trump’s 45%. This picture reflects the closeness of the race, as both political figures prepare to intensify their campaigns in the months leading up to the election.
Poll average
The polling average compiled by the website FiveThirtyEight also highlights this close race, with Harris leading Trump by a margin of 2.6 percentage points (46.4% to 43.8%).
Meanwhile, an aggregate of polls from The Hill/Decision Desk puts Harris with a 1.8% lead nationally, garnering 49% support compared to Trump’s 47%.
The Democratic campaign, led by Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, has managed to improve the position of the party, which initially faced an unfavorable outlook when current President Joe Biden was the leading candidate.
These new data show that the election is shaping up to be a close contest between the vice president and the former president.
Trump, for his part, has an intense week of campaign events planned, seeking to counter the attention Harris will receive during the Democratic National Convention, where her candidacy will be made official.
Trump’s campaign will focus on shoring up its position on issues where it still holds a lead, in an effort to regain ground in the tight race for the White House.
