After being arrested and brought before the US authorities, Mexican Caín Velásquez managed to avoid being sentenced to life imprisonment after being accused of attempted murder, managing to extend his sentence by six more months.

Although the situation is still complex, the retired mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter of Mexican origin had a positive result in the last hearing held in the Courtroom of Santa Clara County, California, where he managed to avoid being deprived of his freedom for life.

This is because, with the advice of his legal team, Velázquez agreed to an agreement in which he pleaded guilty but ‘without opposition’ and is accused of attempted murder, possession of firearms and assault, for which he must now await the next results.

Reasons for the arrest of Cain Velasquez

According to official reports, the former member of the UFC roster in 2022 directly attacked a man identified as Harry Coularte who was accused of sexually abusing the Mexican’s son when the minor was four years old.

Upon hearing the news, Cain sought out the attacker and, without caring about anything, tried to kill him. However, he started a chase in which Paul Bender, the subject’s stepfather, tried to protect him by taking him away in a car.

Despite this, Velásquez did not hesitate to fire the weapon he was carrying, wounding the stepfather in the arm and torso, while the alleged rapist was in the passenger seat trying to protect himself from the shots.

After what happened, the martial artist was arrested and brought before the authorities to answer for his actions and, although it was expected that he could access one of the highest sentences, the judges determined that he did not deserve it, so the next hearing will be on October 18, 2024, where the final sentence will be announced.

For the moment, Caín Velásquez is going through his process in freedom, but he must wear a GPS monitor at all times in addition to complying with some restrictions of the state where he is located. For their part, his lawyers indicate that the result has been favorable since he has no criminal record and the aggressor already has several complaints against him, including that of the son of the former champion.
