Chicago – US President Joe Biden said on Monday that former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump will “discover the power of women” in the November elections, in which the female vote is expected to play a central role in defending the right to abortion.
“Trump will unlock the power of women in 2024!” Biden declared, prompting thunderous applause at the stadium hosting the Democratic convention.
Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is making abortion a central issue in her campaign and is confident that this strategy will mobilize female voters, replicating the success achieved in the 2022 midterm elections, when Democrats achieved better-than-expected results in Congress.
Biden said Harris will succeed in overturning the Trump-sponsored conservative-majority Supreme Court’s decision to suspend constitutional abortion protections.
The US president said that the decision to choose Harris as his vice president was “the best” of his career.
“She’s tough and smart,” said Biden, who a month ago gave up re-election and endorsed Harris, who will be crowned the party’s nominee on Thursday.
Women will be a key voting group if Democrats finally manage to put a woman in the White House for the first time in history.
“I believe in protecting freedom and the right to love and decide,” the president said.
Biden said that if Harris becomes the first black woman and one of South Asian descent to be president of the United States, she would be an example to all “young women that they can do whatever they set their minds to.”
