More than 25 years after the release of his first film as a director, “The Brave,” actor Johnny Depp will reprise this important role with the premiere of his film “Modi-Three Days on the Wing of Madness” at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

According to the Spanish competition, on August 20, the singer of “Edward Scissorhands” will present his new production outside of the official competition, so he will not be able to compete for the coveted Golden Shell.

Despite this, the American artist will have the opportunity to return to a renowned film festival after his first film as a director was part of the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

Johnny Depp’s film “Modi” a biopic about artist Amedeo Modigliani, will premiere at the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival. Starring Riccardo Scamarcio, Al Pacino, and others, it explores 72 chaotic hours in Paris during WWI. The festival runs Sept. 20-28. #SanSebastian #JohnnyDepp pic.twitter.com/KkCK9m7wlV

What will Johnny Depp’s new film be about?

“Modi-Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” Depp’s return to the director’s chair, tells the life of Italian-born artist Amadeo Modigliani, renowned for his great work during the early years of the 20th century in Paris, France, during an episode of his life in the Parisian capital in 1916, in the midst of World War I.

According to what has been revealed so far, the production will show a moment in the artist’s life when he is forced to rethink his career as a painter.

Italian actor Ricardo Scarmacio, known for his role in films such as “John Wick 2” and “A Haunting in Venice,” among others, will play the painter and sculptor who was known for giving his work characters with elongated faces. The rest of the cast is completed by actor Stephen Graham, Antonia Desplat, as well as Oscar winner Al Pacino.

The musician’s new work is inspired by Dennis McIntyre’s play.

This is not the first time Depp has visited the Spanish festival. It was in 2021, during the edition in which he received the coveted Donostia Award, that he revealed that he was working on this story.

Similarly, and after his highly publicized trial in which he was involved along with his ex-wife Amber Heard, the “Ed Woods” interpreter appeared at the 2023 edition of the Cannes Film Festival with the film “Jeanne du Barry.”

As for the rest of the festival, which will be held from September 20 to 28, it will feature the participation of great directors such as Pietr Baunmgartner, with “Bagger Drama”, Sylvia Le Fanu, with “Min Evige Sommer”, Pedro Almodóvar “La Habitaciones de alado”, among others.
