Kamala Harris will deliver her highly anticipated acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination at the party’s convention in Chicago on Thursday. The event will be broadcast live on the country’s major television networks.
Harris will seek to connect with voters by sharing her personal story and highlighting her optimistic vision for the future of the United States during her speech. According to a source close to the preparation of the speech, the vice president will contrast her positive approach with the “darkness” that she says former President Donald Trump represents.
Harris will recount how she was raised by a working-class mother in Oakland and Berkeley, California, in a middle-class neighborhood. She will also discuss her career as a prosecutor, where she dedicated herself to protecting the most vulnerable, from survivors of sexual abuse to homeowners affected by the foreclosure crisis.
The vice president will present her vision of a “new path forward,” an optimistic agenda that seeks to provide economic opportunity and protect fundamental freedoms for all Americans. In contrast, Harris will argue that Trump’s plan aims to “take the country backwards.”
Harris is also expected to deliver an optimistic and patriotic tone. She also wants to make it clear that, unlike Trump, she believes in the “promise of America” and is willing to fight for the country’s fundamental ideals.
As a formality, at the end of his speech, there will be a shower of balloons and confetti in the colors of the United States flag, which will fall from the roof of the convention stadium, in a celebration that has become a tradition at each party convention.
