The Macomb County District Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of a 14-year-old girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend, who have been charged as adults with plotting to kill her mother. The prosecutor said in a statement that the teen tried to choke the woman while she was sleeping.
The girlfriend, whose identity was not released, was indicted Aug. 14 on charges of solicitation to commit murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder. Her bail was set at $1 million.
The teen was indicted Aug. 12 on charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and assault with intent to murder. His bail was set at $2.5 million.
They met on social media
The couple met through social media and began a romance, which the girl’s mother was unaware of, Eastpointe police said, adding that they both agreed to kill the woman.
The teenager allegedly entered the family’s Eastpointe home through a door the girl had left open on July 24. He went into the mother’s bedroom and tried to strangle her while she was sleeping, the prosecutor said.
Prosecutor Peter Lucido told the Free Press that “the design and the plan were very detailed, very concise.” He described how the young man would enter the house without his shoes on, while the girl would be in another room with the dog so it wouldn’t bark.
The young man was confronted by other family members and escaped from the house. One of the triggers that possibly led the minor to carry out the plot was because her mother had taken her cell phone away due to problems, authorities said.
“Accusing these young people as adults”
“This level of criminal activity is unacceptable and we intend to deal with it with the severity it deserves,” U.S. Attorney Peter J. Lucido said in the statement.
“That’s why we’re trying to charge these young people as adults, because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences,” he said.
Both juveniles are being held at the county’s Juvenile Justice Center. Probable cause hearings are scheduled for next week in Eastpointe District Court.
